After being released without bail on a charge of attempted murder, a gang member from Brooklyn, New York participated in three more shootings, say Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

Darrius Sutton attended court months ago for a shooting that took place on May 16. During the incident, he allegedly shot a person in the courtyard of a building in East New York, according to New York Daily News. Feds say the victim was seriously injured.

The 23-year-old faced charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause injury and criminal possession of a weapon but was released without bail set, say court documents.

"At the time of arraignment the sole eyewitness had recanted so we did not have sufficient evidence to keep the defendant in custody. The investigation is continuing and we hope other witnesses come forward," said a Brooklyn District Attorney spokesman.

Federal prosecutors say Sutton is a member of a subset of the Bloods, an organized criminal enterprise, and has been involved in a number of shootings throughout Brooklyn in the past year which have resulted in seven people being injured. He allegedly nearly killed a member of a rival criminal gang in April after sneaking up behind him and shooting him in the back three times.

"As the video of the shooting and the photographs... make clear, it was entirely fortuitous that the defendant was unsuccessful in his attempt to murder the victim," wrote prosecutors last Wednesday.

Sutton is currently in federal custody and staying at Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. He was charged as a felon in possession of a weapon after the shooting on April 20 and may face as much as 10 years in prison.

He was also involved in a music video for a song by Brooklyn rapper, BK Eaz. The song was called "Crime Rate" and was about the gang "boosting the crime rate" in the city.

"The song features lyrics intended to threaten rival gangs," prosecutors wrote in a memo. Feds allege that Sutton's alias is "Blizz Meecho."

In 2014, Sutton served two years after assaulting a woman in 2014 and breaking her teeth. Feds also claim that they determined Sutton was physically abusing his girlfriend through a review of his Facebook activity.

"The defendant’s violent spree over the last year has left at least seven individuals with gunshot wounds," wrote federal prosecutors. "The defendant is extraordinarily violent by any measure and he has shown total disregard for the lives of others."

The new bail reforms in New York have been criticized for prematurely releasing violent criminals back into the public. While politicians stated that those who are charged with violent offenses would not be released, that has not proven to be the case as regards Sutton.
