A man has been charged with the brutal murder of a much-loved pediatrician, whose body was found in a Harlem park on Friday, as well as another murder several days earlier, the New York Post reports.
Police discovered the body of Dr. Bruce Maurice Henry, 60, at Marcus Garvey Park at 2:15 am on Friday, his throat slashed and with multiple stab wounds.
Detectives were able to use clues from this murder to link it to another murder from earlier in the week outside a bar, as well as another attack in a different bar on Thursday evening that left multiple people wounded.
Roland Codrington, 35, was nabbed by police on Christmas Eve driving the Doctor's stolen Mercedes Benz, and was apprehended without a struggle.
Authorities announced on Monday that Codrington has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of assault in the second degree and one count of criminal mischief.
The attacker's slashing spree began on Monday December 19, when the body of James Cunningham was discovered lying in a pool of blood outside a bar at approximately 1 am. The victim was slashed across the neck after a brief conversation with Codrington, and left to bleed out, in what police believe to be a random attack.
"There’s no prior interactions. They bump into each other. They have a 20-second, caught-on-camera dispute," NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said on Monday. "And our perpetrator just takes out a knife and slashes across the neck and then leaves."
Then on Thursday December 22 shortly before midnight at a different establishment, Codrington allegedly went behind the bar and started to choke the 29-year-old female employee with a baseball bat.
As two other patrons attempted to intervene, the attacker allegedly stabbed them both with a large knife and left. All victims in that attack survived.
Essig then suggests that Codrington took a walk into Marcus Garvey park after the attack to cool off, which is where he allegedly stumbled across the Doctor, with whom he has a "verbal exchange" before stabbing him to death.
Police were able to identify the body as that of Dr. Henry, after which they successfully linked the three cases to Codrington.
"We’re looking at all unprovoked stabbings throughout the city to see if he’s done anything else," Essig said, also noting that he has 12 other arrests over the course of more than 15 years.
New York City has seen crime levels skyrocket in the last year, prompting Mayor Eric Eric Adams to declare the city too crime-ridden for illegal immigrants in August.
