"I'm seeing our bench is hating the team [America], and we better start acknowledging and focusing on that," Mayor Adams said.
Mangione came from a wealthy Maryland family and attended both a private high school and an Ivy League school, the University of Pennsylvania. He was valedictorian at his high school graudation. Adams pointed out that Mangione's past does not meet the usual description of someone who is prone to radicalization. He highlighted the disparity between the shooter's wealthy upbringing and his eventual decline into hatred by stating, "Ivy League, grew up in an affluent household."
The Democratic mayor went on to say, "His manifesto clearly is showing some signs of hating," emphasizing that even people in seemingly perfect situations can be swayed by a harmful belief.
"Our children are being radicalized to hate America, to hate the country that put them where they are," Adams continued. "This person has all that one wants to have, but he hated everything to the point of shooting someone. And we better deal with the radicalization of our young people. And, you know, people could complain that I'm saying it, but I'm seeing it. I'm seeing our bench is hating the team [America], and we better start acknowledging and focusing on that."
His concerns extend beyond a single tragic incident. Adams perceives a broader cultural transformation in which young individuals are being instructed to disregard the Western values that have enabled them to achieve success. And is is the same concern that conservatives have been warning about for years.
Mangione was arrested on Dec. 9 in Altoona, Pennyslvania. He is alleged to have executed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in cold blood due to his profound grievances with the insurance company. The killing occurred outside a Manhattan hotel in New York City. Upon arrest, authorities found Mangione in possession of a US passport, multiple fake IDs, and writings about the insurance industry. One of these writings was a manifesto that highlighted a critical analysis of the healthcare industry by award-winning director Michael Moore.
