NYC records first Independence Day with zero shootings or murders

Update: Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch later had to revise the estimate of zero shootings after one man, who died of his injuries, was reportedly shot in the final moments of Friday's July 4th holiday.

New York City recorded zero shootings and murders on Independence Day, marking the first time in history that this has occurred, according to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. This comes as New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced that shootings have hit a record low.

The city has seen a significant decrease in shooting victims in 2025. On July 1, the NYPD released a report showing that the city had just 397 shooting victims between January and June, making a 24 percent decrease from the same period last year. There were 337 shooting incidents during that time, representing a 23 percent decline. Shooting incidents fell 30 percent in June and 22 percent in the second quarter.

"In the first six months of the year, New York City saw the lowest number of shooting victims and shooting incidents in recorded history. Records like this don't happen by chance—they happen because of strategy, precision, and the relentless work of your NYPD officers," said Commissioner Tisch. "We followed the data and deployed officers to our Summer Violence Reduction Zones, took down dangerous street gangs driving gun violence, and removed more than 2,600 illegal firearms off our streets. Thank you to Mayor Adams for his leadership and making sure this department had everything it needed to produce for New Yorkers."

The report also found that major crime in the city dropped by 6 percent through the first half of the year. This included reductions in murder, robbery, grand larceny, auto theft, and felony assault.

“All these reductions in crime are no accident, but are the result of our administration’s clear and continuing focus to make New Yorkers safer and ensure they feel safer, too,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. “Thanks to the hard work of 300,000+ city employees, including the dedication of the brave men and women of the NYPD, we’re making our city the best place to raise a family, and a place where you know that your city is looking out for you — on the streets and in the subways.”

On Thursday, Adams posted on X to highlight these statistics and criticize mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for his anti-police rhetoric.

"Not only did we ignore the noise from the Mamdanis of the world who recklessly called to defund the police, but we doubled down on our support. The results speak for themselves. In the first half of 2025, shooting victims fell to the lowest level in New York City history,” Adams posted.

Adams also quoted Tisch in his post, who added, “When the critics called to cut funding, Mayor Eric Adams chose to cut crime. When the pressure came to back down, he chose to double down. And when others tried to make headlines, he chose to make a difference.”
