Authorities in Ohio say they uncovered 16 children living in extremely poor conditions inside a Vinton County home after officers arrived to serve an unrelated warrant last week. The discovery came during an indecent exposure investigation tied to Gary Siders II.

Officers entered the residence while executing the warrant and found what officials later described as a group of children living in conditions that were immediately alarming.

Police said the children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years old, were found inside a single small room. Court and law enforcement accounts described the space as approximately 12 feet by 12 feet and containing human feces. Seven of the children were later hospitalized in the Columbus area, including two who were taken to trauma centers.

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said investigators believe the situation had been ongoing for years. “It really looked third world. It is not something we are used to seeing in America. I cannot get the smell off of me,” Wilson told reporters Wednesday.

Sheriff Ryan Cain said investigators are now facing significant communication challenges with the children. “One of the investigative challenges is that [the children] are limited. They can communicate, but it’s extremely limited, and some not at all,” he said.

Authorities say the 18-year-old among the children is developmentally disabled and unable to write her name. Officials also said the children had never been enrolled in school.

Court records reviewed in the case show a complex family structure. Gary Siders II, his wife Elizabeth Siders, 33, and his parents, Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina Siders, 66, were arrested following the discovery and face multiple counts of child endangerment, according to the New York Post.

Investigators also noted that Siders II was 18 when he married Elizabeth in 2008, who was 15 at the time. Records show the marriage required parental consent due to her age, with both families involved in signing documents.

Authorities say it remains unclear exactly who is the legal guardian of all the children, which officials have described as an “intra-family case.” The children’s ages include teenagers down to several sets of twins, including 4-year-old, 2-year-old, and 1-year-old twins.

Officials said the conditions inside the home had likely persisted for at least four years. Law enforcement described the scene as heavily unsanitary and said officers removed multiple boxes of evidence from the residence during the investigation.

Siders II is due in court on Tuesday on the original indecent exposure warrant. All four defendants face up to 16 counts of child endangerment, with bond set at $300,000 each. If convicted on all counts, prosecutors say each could face up to 192 years in prison.
