A new poll from the Wall Street Journal has revealed that the majority of Americans believe President Joe Biden is mentally unfit for his job, and that the 80-year-old incumbent is too old to run for a second term.

Just 36 percent of registered voters said that Biden is "mentally up for the job" of being president, while 46 percent said the same for 2024 GOP frontrunner and former president Donald Trump, who is three years younger.

73 percent of voters said that they felt Biden was too old to seek a second term. If elected, Biden would be 81 years old, and would end his second term at 86 years of age. Biden was already the oldest elected president in 2020, at 77 years old.

In comparison, 47 percent of voters said the same for Trump. Notably, two-thirds of Democrats said Biden was too old to run again.

40 percent of voters said that Biden has a strong record of accomplishments as a president, while 51 percent said such of Trump.

The poll also found that 58 percent of voters say the economy has gotten worse under Biden, while 28 percent say it has gotten better. Nearly three in four voters said that inflation is heading in the wrong direction.

40 percent of voters said that they would vote for Trump if the 2024 presidential election were held that day, compared to 39 percent who said they would vote for Biden. 17 percent were undecided, 2 percent said they would vote for Green Party candidate Cornel West, and 1 percent said they would vote for Libertarian Lars Mapstead.

The poll was conducted between August 24 and 30 of 1,500 registered voters, and has a margin of error of 2.5 percent.
