The online platform OnlyFans will institute a blanket ban on "sexually explicit" content, says a Thursday report. The ban will begin October 1.
Nudity will still be permitted, but anything beyond that will now risk being flagged and removed by the OnlyFans system.
The company, which is expected to gross a massive $12.5 billion in 2021, currently has 130 million plus users, many of which are content creators specializing in adult-themed videos, or the customers who have flocked to the site for that content.
According to Vice, it appears that the company has had problems in bringing in investors, despite its huge financial success. The text of a statement specifically mentions "requests of our banking partners and payout providers" as the reason for the policy shift.
"Effective 1 October, 2021, OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually-explicit conduct. In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines," OnlyFans execs wrote.
"Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy. These changes are to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers. We will be sharing more details in the coming days and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines.”
OnlyFans became the most popular platform for people working in the sex industry during the pandemic, as in-person contact became difficult or impossible.
As of this writing, other platforms such as ManyVids, FanCentro and the also-beleaguered Pornhub still allow for the uploading of sexually explicit content.
Pornhub itself has come under heavy criticism for not having proper age verification for individuals featured in videos hosted on the site, and for allowing videos to be uploaded without the consent of all involved.
