WATCH: Ontario NDP demand Ford apologize after accusing Indigenous MPP of 'jumping the line' for a vaccine

The Ontario NDP are demanding an apology from Premier Doug Ford after he accused an Indigenous NDP legislator of flying to a remote community to "jump the line" for vaccines.

"The member flew in [to] get his vaccine, so thank you for doing that and kind of jumping the line," said Ford during Thursday's Question Period.

"I talked to a few chiefs that were pretty upset about that for flying into the community that he doesn't belong to, but that's here nor there."

Ford was accusing Sol Mamakwa, representative for the northern Ontario riding of Kiiwetinoong, had been invited by Chief Gordon Beardy of Muskrat Dam to fly in to help demonstrate to citizens of his riding that the vaccine was safe.

Chief Beardy would go on to call Ford's comments "irresponsible."

Mamakwa tweeted a photo of himself getting vaccinated, and the vaccine appointment was made public.

On March 7, Mamakwa tweeted: "I was invited by Sandy Lake First Nation to receive my 2nd dose of Moderna vaccine.  I was there to promote vaccine uptake in fly-in First Nations."

"Meegwetch to Dr. Suzanne Shoush for the shot."

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called for an apology from Ford, telling media: "Vaccine hesitancy is a reality in many communities as a result of generations of systemic racism, historic traumas and poor treatment by the health system...

"The member for Kiiwetinoong did what all of us are called to do. He stepped up, he led by example and he continues to be a big part of the efforts to show that the vaccine is safe."

Horwath says she also sent a letter to Ford detailing her "shock and considerable concern" over his comments.
