"Most of those individuals have prior felonies such as narcotics, violent crime, immigration crimes and more. Other relevant cases charged this week relate to other immigration crimes."
According to the Department of Justice, the US Attorneys over Arizona, Southern California, New Mexico, Southern Texas, and Western Texas filed the charges against the 1,150 foreign nationals who crossed the border illegally.
In the Southern District of Texas of the 202 of the cases that had to do with border security matters, 129 were charged with illegal entry, 7 were charged with human smuggling, and 63 are facing charges of felony reentry into the US after they had previously been deported.
"Most of those individuals have prior felonies such as narcotics, violent crime, immigration crimes and more. Other relevant cases charged this week relate to other immigration crimes," the DOJ said in a press release about the cases in Texas. The DOJ went on to give the example of Luis Humberto Gonzalez-Sanchez, who allegedly harbored 16 illegal immigrants in his home.
The DOJ went onto cite other cases, saying that there were 410 filed in the Western District of Texas. In the District of Arizona, there were charges brought against 199 foreign nationals who were charged with immigration-related crimes. "The United States filed 74 cases in which aliens illegally re-entered the United States, and the United States also charged 104 aliens for illegally entering the United States. In its ongoing effort to deter unlawful immigration, the United States filed 18 cases against 20 individuals responsible for smuggling illegal aliens into and within the District of Arizona," the press release said.
In the Southern District of California, there were 131 cases brought and in the District of New Mexico, 211 criminal charges were made against illegal immigrants for border security as well as other matters.
“Operation Take Back America” was announced in March by the DOJ and Attorney General Pam Bondi, and has the stated objective of “stopping illegal immigration, eliminating Cartels and TCOs, and ending illegal trafficking of dangerous drugs and human beings.”
