Former Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole delivered his farewell speech on Wednesday, after officially resigning from the position.

O'Toole called his time as leader the "honour of a lifetime," while providing some comments on his hopes for the party.

"This country needs a Conservative Party that is both an intellectual force, and a governing force. Ideology without power is vanity. Seeking power without ideology is hubris, Canadians deserve a government that delivers exemplary management with the foundation based upon values and our decency as a country," he said, specifically calling for balance, ideas, and inspiration from party members.

"Conservatism is about a vision of the country that makes us exceptional. It feeds the soul, it causes us they aspire to be better for our country, for our communities, for our families and neighbours, and for our role as a leader on the world stage.

"But it is just dreaming without the lever of power that comes with inspiring the country and earning the trust of its people.

"Canada is in the dire moment of our history. You need only take a walk down the street in front of Parliament to see how divided we are," he said in reference to the freedom convoys currently gridlocking the streets of downtown Ottawa.

The former leader provided his words of advise to his party and the prime minister in Latin: "Audi alteram partem"

"Hear the other side," he said. "Listen to all voices, not just the echoes from your own tribe. Realize that our country is divided and people are worried."

O'Toole said he would pledge his support "and unwavering loyalty" to the Conservatives' next leader, and urge everyone in the party to "come together and do the same."

A teary-eyed O'Toole thanked his family, especially his children, who he assured he'd spend more time with than compared to the last 18 months.
