A new poll shows 61% of Canadians are in favour of Canada taking military action in Ukraine at some point, with 25% saying troops should be sent in immediately.

Amid rising tensions in eastern Europe, support for Ukraine has grown across the world.

A new poll shows that Canadians firmly support Ukrainians in their fight against Russia and Putin's invasion of their homeland, with a majority agreeing that military action by Canada is warranted.

On Wednesday, Maru published the results of its latest poll, in which Canadians were asked a number of questions about the situation in Ukraine.

The poll found that 91% of Canadians "stand with the people of Ukraine in full opposition to the tyranny of Russia’s Vladimir Putin, with 81% wishing "Canada and they, themselves, could do more to support and defend the people of the Ukraine."

When it comes to exactly what a Canadian response should look like, 61% of Canadians said they were in favour of military action "either now or later," with 25% arguing it should happen immediately, even if it means casualties, and 36% urging the use of financial and economic sanctions in the short term with possible long term military action afterwards.

On the flip side, 26% said Canada "should not send any military forces," with 17% arguing that "this is not Canada’s conflict and that we should stay out of it completely and look after ourselves."

The poll also found that the majority of Canadians felt Putin was serious about threatening to use nuclear weapons, and that the invasion of Ukraine could possibly signal the start of World War III.

Canada has thus far instituted a number of economic sanctions on Russia, a tactic which the majority of Canadians think "may cause the Russian people to finally revolt against Vladimir Putin successfully because of what he has done in Ukraine."
