A national survey by phone and email of people who are likely to vote shows that most voters are ready to have the police step in and stop the violent protests which continue across the US, according to a Rasmussen Reports.

The pole also indicates that people feel the issue of the protests and how they are handled will have a big influence on how they vote the next time they go to the urns.

Of all voters surveyed, 72 percent said that they are concerned about the growing level of violence related to the protests, while 43 percent said they were very concerned. There were 62 percent of respondents who said that this level of violence is important enough to impact their November vote, whereas 35 percent said that it was in fact a very important factor.

In addition, 66 percent of Americans oppose defunding the police, which is one of the main demands of those who have been taking to the streets to protest. Of those who responded, to the survey, 61 percent said that they believe that crime will go up if the police are defunded where they live.

The higher the age of the person surveyed, the more likely they were to be concerned with issues related to the protests.

But the biggest dividing line in the survey was the party affiliation of those polled. 75 percent of those who identified as Republican supported forceful police action to crack down on the protests, followed by 47 percent of independent or unaffiliated voters, and only 31 percent of Democrats. Of Democrats, 56 percent feel that the protests should be allowed to continue indefinitely.

The total numbers show that 50 percent support a crackdown on the protests, 38 percent support letting the protests carry on as they have been, and 11 percent are undecided. The survey itself can be found here.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted August 10-11, 2020 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
