"I’ll be voting 'no' on all Senate bills - other than DHS funding - until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act."
"I’ll be voting 'no' on all Senate bills - other than DHS funding - until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act," Gill posted to X. "I encourage all of my colleagues in the House to do the same."
The move from Gill comes after President Donald Trump laid out a similar demand regarding the SAVE America Act. "I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION - GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY - ILLNESS, DISABILITY, TRAVEL: NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS: NO TRANSGENDER MUTILIZATION FOR CHILDREN! DO NOT FAIL!!!" the president wrote in a Truth Social post.
The SAVE America Act would issue national voter ID requirements as well as require that people prove their citizenship in the US in order to vote in federal elections. It has been stalled in the Senate for weeks on end as some GOP senators have been pushing to get it through the chamber and to the president's desk.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) in particular has been pushing for the legislation, and has said that forcing the Democrats to hold a talking filibuster would be an option to get the legislation passed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has claimed that there is not enough support from the GOP senators in the chamber to weather a talking filibuster legislative session, which may take days or weeks.
