Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York has released a statement saying that she will also object to the certification of the electoral college vote on Jan. 6. Stefanik joins a growing cadre of Republicans who have concerns about that certification.
The recent statement from House Intelligence Committee member Stefanik reads, in part:
"I plan to object to certain contested electors on January 6. I do not take this action lightly. I am acting to protect our Democratic process," the New York Post reports.
“Article II and the Twelfth Amendment of the Constitution make clear that I have an obligation to act on this matter if I believe there are serious questions with respect to the Presidential election. I believe those questions exist."
"Tens of millions of Americans are rightly concerned that the 2020 election featured unprecedented voting irregularities, unconstitutional overreach by unelected state officials and judges ignoring state election laws, and a fundamental lack of ballot integrity and security."
As of now, 140 House members and 12 Senators have joined in the effort to contest the election certifications because of concerns about widespread election fraud which could have influenced the outcome of the election.
Republicans themselves are split over this issue, with such prominent Republicans as Liz Cheney and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell not backing the move to challenge the election results.
