Alec Stewart, who uses the alias "Mac," is an assistant wildlife manager at the DNR.
Stewart has been charged with conspiracy to impede or injure federal agents and officers. The federal indictment, handed down last week, accuses Stewart of being involved with Direct Action Minnesota. This Antifa collective organizes anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across the Minneapolis area and uses violent, revolutionary militant-style tactics to carry out their objectives, prosecutors said.
DNR confirmed Stewart's employment to Alpha News. "Alec Stewart is a current employee with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources," a DNR spokesperson said in a statement. "The Department is aware of and is reviewing the indictment."
The agency did not address whether Stewart has been placed on leave during its review.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) wrote in the 94-page indictment that Stewart and his co-conspirators trained extremists in surveillance, rapid mobilization, shield tactics, blockade operations, and methods designed to interfere with federal immigration enforcement. The purpose of the conspiracy was to prevent immigration enforcement operations through the use of force, intimidation, and threats.
According to the indictment, members of the Twin Cities Antifa cell used encrypted Signal chats, rapid-response networks, and a system known as "Whipple Watch" to identify federal vehicles, track agents, and relay intelligence to militants who would then rapidly mobilize to confront federal agents. Prosecutors say participants followed agents from federal facilities to other locations while coordinating responses in real time.
Stewart is not the only DNR employee who has left-wing extremist views.
Tyler Danke, a DNR natural resources program consultant, wrote on social media after the July 2024 assassination attempt against President Donald Trump: "Too bad they weren't a better shot."
The DNR issued a statement condemning Danke's death wish for the president. However, the agency declined to comment to Alpha News when asked if any disciplinary action had been taken.
