"This needs to be done with the utmost professionalism and discretion."
Newly published emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request have revealed that the National Archives and Records Administration told staff to handle the nine boxes of documents taken from President Joe Biden’s Boston office.
The emails were published this week after the request for emails was fulfilled and showed a top NARA official contacting a colleague with an email titled "Urgent Matter" on the night of the November 2022 midterm election.
“On Wednesday, I will be asking you to send two staff to retrieve and then secure some materials from a law firm. This needs to be done with the utmost professionalism and discretion,” the official wrote in reference to the Boston office of attorney Pat Moore, who was helping manage Biden’s documents at the time, according to the Washington Examiner.
Then-Acting Archivist of the United States Debra Wall revealed to Congress in a March letter that NARA had obtained boxes from Moore’s office on November 9, and these boxes were moved to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. Biden’s lawyers alerted NARA on November 3 that Moore had moved these boxes from the Penn Biden Center in Washington Dc to the Boston office, and that the Department of Justice told NARA to pick up the boxes there and bring them to the JFK Library, which was the nearest secure facility.
The letters revealed officials talking about the movement of the boxes as early as November 4, with one official writing, "It is likely we will need to pick up [redacted] boxes on Monday. More as this evolves."
On November 7, another NARA official wrote, "Change of plans. We are now intending to take temporary physical custody of all materials."
A NARA official wrote in a chat on November 9, "9 bxs picked up in Boston and being secured at JFK."
The public knowledge of the discovery that Biden possessed documents with classified documents on them wasn’t revealed until a January 9, 2023 CBS report. Documents were also found at the Penn Biden Center as well as Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware residence.
The government response to the discovery of classified documents Biden was holding onto was a departure from the discovery of documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, which resulted in a raid as well as a federal indictment.
