When Nancy Pelosi ripped up Trump’s SOTU speech, she was considered a hero by Democrats.
It has been revealed that Hosue Speaker Mike Johnson apologized to Joe Biden in March following the State of the Union address for "the eye-roll memes that went around the world."
According to RealClearPolitics, Johnson pulled Biden aside at the Friends of Ireland luncheon to "apologize for the eye-roll memes that went around the world."
Biden reportedly laughed and told Johnson, "I’m just grateful you didn’t rip my speech up," referring to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s actions during a Trump State of the Union address.
Johnson replied, "Well, Mr. President, don't think my friends back home didn't want me to light it on fire."
At the conclusion of Trump’s last State of the Union address in February 2020, Pelsoi, seated behind Trump, ripped up the printed pages of his speech.
The move was celebrated by Democrats, with one source close to Pelosi telling CNN at the time that the move wasn’t planned, but was sparked by anger at his address.
"When you take into account the abundance of contempt Trump has shown Pelosi, not just during his State of the Union, but over the course of his entire presidency, ripping his speech into pieces honestly feels like an understated reaction," Liz Plank wrote for NBC News.
According to the Associated Press, Pelosi told House Democrats in their private caucus meeting after the State of the Union address, "I felt very liberated last night."
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries said, "as far as I'm concerned the shredder wasn't available, and so she did what she needed to do."
Rep Jerry Nadler said he was "delighted" by the action, saying that Trump’s speech was full of "lie after lie."
"To have to sit there and listen to the president's lies, it's pretty hard to take. So she did what she did," Senator Mazie Hirono told CBS News.
