Former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell spoke at the Republican National Convention tonight. As regards foreign policy, he said that Trump had been able to say in public what so many Americans had been thinking privately.
"He called America's endless wars what they were—a disaster," Grenell said.
His discussion of Trump's foreign policy achievements centered on Trump's unwavering determination to put American interests first.
"With Donald Trump you always know who is in charge," he said, "because the answer is you."
He said that prior to the Trump administration, while trillions of American dollars were being spent on endless wars globally, "no candidate could bring themselves to admit that something had gone badly wrong with American foreign policy. That the American voter, the American soldier, and the American taxpayer, had all been let down."
Grenell said that Trump "called America's endless wars what they were—a disaster. The media was shocked," he said, "because Trump was running as a Republican.
Grenell said that Trump "said what we all knew, that American foreign policy was not making America safer."
He spoke out against the foreign policies of the Obama administration, taking aim at a globalism that decimated American industry and manufacturing. Grenell said that these actions were the result of a flawed perspective—that the Democrats believed that if they capitulated enough to international interests the rest of the globe would come to look like the United States.
Previous administrations, said Grenell, attempted "unlimited globalization" and conquest in the interest of nation building, going so far as to sign a climate agreement in Paris, "but didn't ground any of it in the interests of the average American."
Manufacturing, wages, and American livelihoods suffered as a result, Grenell said. "That's what happened when Washington stopped being the capital of the United States, and started being the capital of the world."
"I was proud to witness President Trump to say to foreign leaders: I don't blame you for wanting America to pay for your security, I actually respect you for out negotiating the presidents who came before me, but it stops with me."
"Our priority is the American people's security," he said of the Trump administration, noting that "the job of all leaders" is to put their own people first.
He emphasized concerns over the threat that CCP interests pose for America, that Trump's bilateral trade deals hold other parties accountable to the US, and not to a shifting faction of other nation's interests, and that what the US needs are "alliances that share responsibility."
"In four years, Donald Trump didn't start any new wars, he brought troops home, he rebuilt the military, and signed peace deals that make America safer."
Grenell then took moral aim at the Democrat opposition, saying that they accused Trump of nationalism when they wanted to insult him, as though they believed that Trump "isn't supposed to base policy in American interests."
"When those who seek freedom take tremendous person risk in places like Hong Kong, Tehran or Minsk, there is no doubt who President Trump's administration supports. We will always stand for their God-given freedoms."
Biden is "someone they've had to pull out of retirement," he said. The Biden administration would be steeped in an unclear line of leadership, where leftist radicals are in charge, and not the candidate.
This he contrasted to an an "America first" Trump doctrine that places American interests ahead of global concerns.
Under President Trump, Grenell was the first openly gay cabinet member in the US. Grenell wasn't on the platform to talk about LGBT rights, but about his specialty, foreign policy. This angered some in the identitarian community, who found Grenell's dedication to his expertise, and not identity boxes, to be an affront to their movement.
Grenell recently appeared in a video with the Log Cabin Republicans stating his belief that Trump has been the most pro-LGBT candidate in US history.
As US Ambassador to Germany in 2019, Grenell launched a campaign to decriminalize homosexuality internationally. Among the 72 nations that criminalize homosexuality, both Botswana and Gabon have decriminalized it.
Despite allegations to the contrary, Grenell is not the only member of the LGBT community that contends that Trump's policies have been a net positive for LGBT Americans.
