RNC Chair confirms she will support Trump if he's the 2024 GOP nominee

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel made a pledge on Sunday that she will back former President Donald Trump as the 2024 GOP presidential nominee should the voters pick him, regardless of whether he is convicted of a crime in any one of his ongoing court cases

"Whoever the voters choose is the appropriate [nominee]," McDaniel revealed on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. "I know this is newsworthy and as party chair, I'll support who the voters choose, if they choose Donald Trump."

McDaniel noted that the voters are "looking at this and they believe there's a two-tiered system of justice," and said "They don't believe a lot of the things that are coming out of this, and they're making these decisions. You're seeing that reflected in the polls."

Former President Trump has remained a strong front-runner in practically any major poll that has been released since his candidacy first began.

McDaniel discussed the RNC debates as well, saying that she values the process and how it is changing.

"Some of the things we've done with this debate process have been very instrumental," she explained. "We started with 14 candidates in 2015. Going into Iowa, there were still two stages and 10 candidates in that race."

She said that the RNC's new rules that necessitate stricter polling criteria and small-donor donation limits have resulted in there being "five on the debate stage" and that it is helping the RNC engage volunteers.

These remarks by McDaniel come as she joined NBC's Meet the Press on the same day and thanked NBC host Kristen Welker for moderating the third Republican Presidential debate, telling her that "this is the time where we met the moment."

It also comes just after an awkward exchange in which Fox News host Laura Ingraham confronted the RNC chair about the Republican Party's electoral performance.

After Ingraham asked why Republicans were outspent by $8 million in Virginia, a state where Democrats gained control of both the state House of Delegates and Senate during its 2023 election, McDaniel responded by insisting that "A lot of people don’t understand fundraising."

"I can’t raise state dollars," she said. "I don’t get unlimited convention and state dollars. And these were State House and State Senate races."
