SAVANAH HERNANDEZ REPORTS: Democrat judge allows 900 accused murderers to walk free on bond in Houston

A Democrat judge in Houston, Texas has allowed 900 accused murderers to walk free on bond under her direction. Judge Hilary Unger, of Harris County, who originally campaigned on "alternatives to incarceration" has also been tied to a pattern of criminals who committed murder after being granted bond.

Texas Score Card has reported that during a city council meeting, Houston Mayor John Whitmire stated that, "900 accused killers are currently walking the city streets right now on bond." Those criminals have all been tied to Unger's court, with multiple accused of capitol murder currently walking free.

Most notable is Dremone Francis who back in 2024 was charged with capitol murder of a Harris County police officer and tampering with evidence. Despite prosecutors requesting no bond, Judge Unger set bond for $1 million dollars and Francis was released.

In 2019, Andrew Williams was also accused of capitol murder, but after being granted bond by Unger, was released and went on to commit another murder in 2021, killing a 71-year-old woman by running her over with his car after robbing her.

Back in 2021, Judge Unger also granted Marquise Wear bond after he was charged with two separate felonies. After being released, he picked up another theft charge. Wear's bond was not revoked and he later went on to shoot and kill a father in front of his 12-year-old daughter. Wear was then granted a $150,000 bond for the murder and was released within a day.

Wear's crime was tied to a pattern in which eight other defendants all linked to Unger's court ended up committing murder while out on bond.

In the most recent example of Unger's bad policy costing lives, Austin Collette, who had pled guilty to a murder he had committed in 2019, had his release authorized by Judge Unger while awaiting sentencing. Earlier this month he shot and killed his girlfriend and then committed suicide while under house arrest.

The Houston Police Officers' Union has described Unger as "rogue" and has called her actions a "betrayal of public trust and a direct threat to every law-abiding citizen of Harris County". Harris County currently holds the title for highest crime rate in Texas with district judges like Unger leading the charge in releasing criminals who continue the cycle of violence and crime within the city.

Unger, who has been in office since 2019, is currently seeking re-election. Her term set to end in December of 2026.
