Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a joint statement Monday night attacking the conservative justices on the US Supreme Court.

Their statement was issued in response to a leak of an alleged draft of the Supreme Court’s majority opinion by Justice Samuel Alito overturning Roe v. Wade through a decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The statement accused the justices of lying to the Senate and called their decision, "if the report is accurate," "an abomination."

Pelosi tweeted the statement and said in the thread, "If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans."

Pelosi continued, "The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history. Several of these conservative Justices, who are in no way accountable to the American people, have lied to the U.S. Senate, ripped up the Constitution and defiled both precedent and the Supreme Court’s reputation."

She added, "This is at the expense of tens of millions of women who could soon be stripped of their bodily autonomy and the constitutional rights they’ve relied on for half a century. The party of Lincoln and Eisenhower has now completely devolved into the party of Trump. Every Republican Senator who supported Sen. McConnell and voted for Trump Justices pretending that this day would never come will now have to explain themselves to the American people."

Shortly thereafter, Schumer tweeted, echoing Pelosi's comments, "The party of Lincoln and Eisenhower has now completely devolved into the party of Trump."

He continued, "Several conservative Justices, who are in no way accountable to the people, have lied to the Senate, ripped up the Constitution, and defiled precedent and the Court’s reputation—all at the expense of women who could soon be stripped of bodily autonomy and constitutional rights."

Schumer concluded with, "If the report is accurate, the Roberts Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years. The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination."

According to the report, Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett had voted in the majority with Alito after December's oral arguments, and as the court was set to reach a decision. Justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Breyer were all opposed to overturning the ruling, which would kick the abortion question back to each state, or will require Congress to act to create a law on abortion that would be effective across the country.

New York Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for a constitutional amendment on abortion following the leak story breaking Monday night.
