"Right-wing nutjobs can attack me all they want, but LGBTQ kids do not deserve these attacks," Wiener said in a video with the text "Libs of TikTok wants to forcibly out LGBTQ kids."

In a TikTok video on Thursday, California State Senator Scott Wiener accused popular X account Libs of TikTok of "viciously attacking" him for backing a bill that would prevent schools from informing parents if their children want to change their pronouns unless the children give consent.

"Right-wing nutjobs can attack me all they want, but LGBTQ kids do not deserve these attacks," Wiener said in a video with the text "Libs of TikTok wants to forcibly out LGBTQ kids. "We recently in the Senate passed incredibly important legislation to ban forced outing of trans and nonbinary kids in our schools. And right-wing nut jobs like Riley Gaines and Libs of TikTok are now viciously attacking me for speaking out in favor of getting rid of these horrible forced outing policies."

Wiener said that "school districts, even in California, are requiring - mandating that if a teacher learns that a kid is using different pronouns or dressing a certain way or wearing certain makeup, right, just identifying as trans or nonbinary, requiring that that teacher immediately call the kid’s parents to tell them," adding that this could lead to "violence against that kid at home, which could lead to the kid being kicked out and becoming homeless."

"This is happening here in California. And I want to be very clear, the only person whose business it is when, whether, how they come out to their parents, is that kid. It is none of anyone else's d*mn business. I spoke out against us and these crazy right-wing trolls are now attacking me and threatening me. But that's okay. I'm a big boy. I'm an elected official. I can handle it. These kids do not deserve this demonization. We have to have their backs, we got to speak out against these forced outing policies," he concluded.

In response to the video, Libs of TikTok wrote, "Raise your hand if you’re also a “right wing nut job” because you’re against schools hiding information from parents."

The California Senate passed AB-1955 earlier in June, with the bill now awaiting a vote in the Assembly. It passed along party lines in the Senate, with all 29 Democrats voting in favor and their eight Republican colleagues voting against.

The bill seeks to prohibit school districts and governing bodies of other educational institutions from "enacting or enforcing any policy, rule, or administrative regulation that requires an employee or a contractor to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by law, as provided."

The bill would also prevent governing bodies from "retaliating or taking adverse action against an employee on the basis that the employee supported a pupil in the exercise of specified rights, work activities, or providing certain instruction, as provided."

Republican State Sen. Kelly Seyarto opposed the bill, saying that "If we include parents, that's the best way to take something from people being angry and mad to developing a solution that works for everybody." California Family Council Vice President Greg Burt warned against "assum[ing] that all parents are unsafe."
