"I'm deeply worried that ISIS from Afghanistan will end up targeting Americans."
On Sunday, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) expressed concern that ISIS-K, the branch of the terrorist group in Afghanistan, could execute a terrorist attack on US soil.
In an interview with Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream, Cotton was asked how concerned he is about an attack by the organization. He said, "Well I am very worried about it.”
Cotton, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee added, "You don't even have to sit on the Intelligence Committee and have classified intelligence, you can just look at what the commanding general of our force in the Middle East said."
"'In as little as six months you could have an attack like this,'" he quoted. "It turned out to be about six days."
Cotton noted, "It might be a little bit longer to project that kind of attack against the American homeland or the western hemisphere." He added, "But again, we have millions of Americans who live or who travel abroad throughout Europe and Asia, embassies, businesses there, so I'm deeply worried that ISIS from Afghanistan will end up targeting Americans sooner rather than later."
ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Moscow that killed over 137 people earlier this week. In the interview with Sen Cotton, host Shannon Bream reminded viewers that ISIS-K was the organization that carried out the suicide bombing in Kabul in 2021 that killed 13 US troops.
Cotton added that what happened at the Crocus City Hall concert in Moscow "was the unfortunate echo of President Biden's chaotic and disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan."
ISIS-K considers the Taliban in Afghanistan to be insufficiently devout in its adherence to Islam, even though both are known for their brutality. They have historically attacked one another.
The organization released body cam footage of the Moscow attack on Saturday where one gunman can be heard saying, "The infidels will be defeated, God willing. God is great. The infidels will be defeated. We went out for the sake of God and to seek His religion."
