Sex offender with 300+ arrests charged with biting police officer in Hawaii

A 60-year-old man who is a registered sex offender as well as a career criminal has been charged with biting a Honolulu, Hawaii police officer. The arrest came just days after he was released after a different run-in with the law concerning meth use.

Tommy J. Chiles, 60, has been convicted 78 different times on criminal charges. He has been arrested over 300 times, and his recent arrest for biting the police officer put him in the slammer with a bail set at $25,000.

“We’re extremely concerned with the background of the situation. We don’t understand how he was out on the streets,” Nicholas Schlapak, the president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers union, said, per Hawaii New Now. He said that the case was "appalling," and said bail should be set even higher given the extent of Chiles' rap sheet.

“This is a very heinous crime,” Schlapak said, later adding that criminals need to understand the offense "is taken seriously by law enforcement and also by the judicial process.” Chiles has been in and out of prison since the 1980s. He was convicted in 1988 of sexual assault and had to register as a sex offender, however, the registry shows that he is non-compliant.

“That’s a big thing. It’s a class C felony to fail to register as a sex offender,” defense attorney Megan Kau said. “He’s not safe to be in our community.” Chiles has been hit with a slew of convictions, with crimes ranging from indecent exposure to lewdness and others.

The career criminal is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
