On Thursday, Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children declared an emergency due to a COVID-19 outbreak in its pediatric medicine and respirology areas.
The declaration was made in collaboration with Toronto Public Health.
According to CTV News, The threshold for declaring an outbreak can be as little as one new case, as long as it is believe that that person caught the virus within the hospital's confines.
In this case, two people within the facility have tested positive as of May 16.
A spokesperson from the hospital released the following statement:
"SickKids is actively investigating how the virus was transmitted and is working closely with TPH [Toronto Public Health]. Everyone who has potentially been exposed or is suspected to have been exposed has been notified."
The statement continues by saying that adult patients at the facility appear not to be infected, and that the risk to patients and staff, as well as those who may have visited them, remains low.
