Independent film Sound of Freedom has now earned more money at the domestic box office than the latest installments of Indiana Jones and Mission: Impossible.
According to Deadline, the film has earned $174 million in the US since its July 4 release, more than Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's $172.9 million, which was released June 30, and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's $160.8 million, released July 12.
Sound of Freedom has not yet been released internationally but is scheduled to be rolled out overseas during the next few months.
Variety reported that Sound of Freedom's budget was approximately $14.5 million, up against the $300 million budgets of Dead Reckoning and Dial of Destiny, before another $100 million was spent on marketing.
Disney, which owns Lucasfilm, is slated to lose big on the Indiana Jones sequel. Ironically, Disney at one point owned Sound of Freedom when it purchased Fox in 2019.
The film tells the story of Tim Ballard, a former government agent, who started an organization to fight child sex trafficking in Colombia. The film stars Jim Caviezel, who plays Ballard as he embarks on a mission to rescue children who have arguably been subjected to the worst of crimes.
The film has been dismissed by mainstream media and other left-wing critics as a "conspiracy," despite being based on a true story about Ballard's organization, Operation Underground Railroad, and a real mission where his team saved 55 children and 123 people in total.
During a recent interview with Variety, Alejandro Monteverde, the writer and director of Sound of Freedom revealed that a sequel might be in the works which would be focused on child sex trafficking in Haiti.
