A 24-year-old man was killed after a wheel of a trailer being towed by a pickup truck came loose.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the wheel hopped over the Highway 401 barrier near McCowan and Markham roads.

Police say the wheel struck another vehicle and the driver died from his injuries sustained in a collision.

OPP Sgt. Dan Hunter said that the wheel stud snapped off.

"When [wheels] do come off, they’re travelling at highway speed, just the same as the vehicle,” said Hunter in a video published on the OPP Highway Safety Division Twitter. “If they manage to get off into the opposing lane of traffic, into the oncoming traffic, its closing speed is twice what it should be."

"So your reaction time is very, very short, if you have any time at all, to take evasive action."

Police say they are looking for dashcam footage of the incident.
