“You know that’s the other Jewish guy named Josh, right?”
Representative Summer Lee appeared to confuse Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro with New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer, only for Representative Ilhan Omar to chime into a spat between the two and conflate US military support for Ukraine with support for Israel.
The confusion began on Monday when Gottheimer posted criticism of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the far-left organization that has been gaining traction among certain left-wing voters. Gottheimer responded to a post by Van Jones arguing the group should not be embraced in the Democratic Party.
“I’m glad to see other Democrats reiterating what I’ve been saying all along: the DSA are not Democrats. They’re socialists, who want to hijack the Democratic Party,” Gottheimer wrote. “The Democrats have a big tent. That’s our strength. We embrace a range of ideas — but there’s no room for anti-American bomb-throwers who oppose our ideas, values, & leaders.”
Lee then replied to Gottheimer, writing, “What about Dems who sign bombs and vote to drop them?” She appeared to confuse Gottheimer with Shapiro, who had done the bomb-signing. Her post was also hit with a community note on X clarifying the distinction between the two.
Shapiro had previously stood alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where he signed munitions manufactured in Pennsylvania intended to be used in Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Noting the mix-up, Gottheimer shot back by saying, “You know that’s the other Jewish guy named Josh, right?”
This then prompted Omar to chime in, apparently conflating the Ukraine munitions with US support to Israel by saying, “He signed the bombs you voted to be dropped. Hope this helps!”
Gottheimer pushed back again, noting the bombs in question were tied to Ukraine aid and pointing out that Omar herself had voted for the 2024 Ukraine security supplemental appropriations act.
“Ilhan, you know who else voted for it? You,” Gottheimer posted.
