Susan Sarandon apologizes for post comparing slain NYPD officer's funeral to 'facism'

"I deeply regret the meme I recently shared on Twitter that included Officer Jason Rivera's funeral," Sarandon said. "I reacted quickly to the picture without connecting it to a police funeral and I realize now how insensitive and deeply disrespectful it was to make that point at that time."

75-year-old actress Susan Sarandon apologized Friday for an "insenstive" post she shared on Twitter comparing the massive turnout of slain New York Police Department officer Jason Rivera's funeral to "fascism."

"I deeply regret the meme I recently shared on Twitter that included a photo of Officer Jason Rivera’s funeral," started Sarandon in a subsequent Twitter post:

"I reacted quickly to the picture without connecting it to a police funeral and I realize now how insensitive and deeply disrespectful it was to make that point at that time," Sarandon continued. "I sincerely apologize to the family of Officers Rivera and Mora for causing additional pain during their time of grieving."

According to the Daily Wire, Sarandon, who describes herself as "mother, activist, actress" on Twitter, shared a meme that included a photo of the huge crowd of mourners who gathered in support for Rivera's family on the day of the funeral.

"I'm gonna tell my kids this is what fascism looks like," the meme's caption read.

A taunt above funeral procession imagery said: "So, if all these cops weren't needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they aren’t needed ANY day?"

The New York Police Benevolent Association (PBA) fired back in response: "This is what privilege looks like: a wealthy actress, safe in her bubble, mocking heroes & making light of the crisis that cops are battling alongside our communities. NYC is uniting to stop the violence — @SusanSarandon is living on a different planet."

Rivera and fellow officer Wilbert Mora were killed in the line of duty while police were responding to a report of a domestic violence incident in Harlem.
