A teacher’s assistant in a Texas high school died over the weekend after suffering head injuries during what the school called an “interaction” with a student. Alfred Jimenez, called Mr. Fred, died in the hospital after succumbing to his injuries. He was 73 years old and had worked with students who had learning and emotional disabilities at Brandeis High School since 2014.

The February 7 incident in which Jimenez suffered a head injury during the interaction is being investigated by Northside ISD police.

Jimenez worked with students who had moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, My San Antonio reports. He was "attempting to redirect a student" when the injury occurred. He was immediately transported to the hospital.

"The injury occurred while the employee was attempting to redirect a student. In the course of the interaction with the student, the employee fell to the floor and sustained a head injury," said Brandeis school district spokesman Barry Perez.

The superintendent and principal sent out their own letter, saying "The entire Bronco family is grieving his loss. His impact on the campus was far reaching and impacted students and staff both in and out of the classroom."

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Jimenez Family during this challenging time. We remain dedicated to providing support to Mrs. Jimenez and her family. In addition, counselors will also be available to support students and staff at the campus. We ask that you keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers," they continued.

Counselors were on the school campus to support students and staff.
