"This is the dismantling of our democracy. This is the dismantling of our Constitution."
"It could be, it could be financial. And I don't know that it's purely political. It could be," Hostin began. "But my concern is, if it is political, then everyone should be concerned. People on the right should be concerned. People on the left should be concerned, because it's very clear that if it is political, this is the dismantling of our democracy. This is the dismantling of our Constitution.
"And so the First Amendment is the First Amendment for a reason, and that is freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to speak truth to power. If that is taken away, if the comedians are being attacked, then that means our Constitution is being dismantled," Hostin said as the crowd cheered.
"That means the very rubric of our democracy is being dismantled. And I think every single person should be really, really concerned about it. I'm thrilled that Senator Warren, Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, is asking SkyDance, is asking for answers whether or not this was political. The Writers Guild is actually asking the attorney general to look into this situation, to find out if it was political. And if we find out it is political, what are we going to do as a country? We must protect our Constitution and we must protect our democracy. This is bigger than just the cancelation of a television show," she said.
Daily Show Host Jon Stewart indicated that the show's termination was Trump's fault and Colbert, in speaking from his stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater about the end of the show, for which he's won some 10 Emmys, told Trump to "go f*ck [him]self." In response to that, Stewart led a gospel choir on his show singing "go f*ck yourself" while he danced around.
Hostin has a history of questionable takes. She has compared the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 to the Holocaust, World War II, and to chattel slavery. "It was one of the worst moments in American history, and when you think about the worst moments in American history, you know, like World War II, things that happened, you know, like the Holocaust, chattel slavery," she said.
She has also claimed that rap artists who perform for Trump are dishonoring black people. Those rappers included Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy, and others who stepped out at the Crypto Ball during inauguration weekend. She claimed that voter ID laws are a "vestige of post slavery laws" that would negatively affect women.
And she was also forced to read a disclaimer, on air, after accusing former Rep. Matt Gaetz of "child sex crimes" and "child trafficking," both of which were false and unverifiable. "This false smear, following a three-year criminal investigation, should be viewed with great skepticism. That DOJ investigation was closed, with no charges being brought," she said.
