Three people have been charged for allegedly using drones to smuggle cannabis and guns to four provincial detention centers and three penitentiaries, Montreal Gazette reports.

Steven Maigar, Shane Maigar, and John Maigar Magda, 44, 40, and 75 respectively, were arrested on Thursday.

A total of 18 charges were filed against the trio, including breaking and entering and drug trafficking charges, as well as several charges related to the delivery of contrabands.

The investigation into the scheme began a few months ago after a series of drones were discovered just outside the walls of a Sherbrooke jail.

Investigators seized 40 cell phones, 11 drones, 2,300 methamphetamine tablets, and nearly 15 pounds of cannabis during the investigation.

Steven Maigar had previously been charged with and convicted of operating an illegal cannabis grow-op in 2017 after his grow-op, which was set up in a rented garage, caught fire in 2014. He had also previously been convicted for attempting to smuggle over $345,000 in cash from the US to Canada while hiding in the trunk of a car.
