Tim Ballard, the founder of Operation Underground Railroad and inspiration for the anti-trafficking film, "Sound of Freedom," appeared on Tim Pool's podcast on Thursday along with Eduardo Verástegui, the producer of the movie. During the last few minutes of the live stream, the show raised over $50,000 for Tim Ballard's anti-human trafficking foundation.
Tim Pool encouraged people to donate to the pay it forward effort of Angel Studios, the studio which released Sound of Freedom, as well as Ballard's new anti-trafficking organization, Spear Fund. In addition, Pool personally committed $10,000 to the movie’s pay it forward effort.
"The way it works, we have this meter here on YouTube that shows us the total amount of super chats that came in during the show. What happens is YouTube takes 35 percent, we get the rest. Forget the 35 percent, the total number that's there I'm going to donate to your organization," Pool said to Ballard.
Ballard announced on the show that he is stepping down as head of Operation Underground Railroad (OUR) to start a new foundation called the Spear Fund. The film originally had the logo of OUR at the end, but Ballard wanted to remove it.
He said, "I told Angel Studios, take the logo off of OUR... because so many organizations out there are doing such great work, and we're not the solution to every kid."
Ballard wanted to create something new in what he saw as the "only scalable approach." The Spear Fund will support OUR along with other anti-trafficking and impactful organizations. Ballard said the model of the fund is similar to a "capitalistic approach where if you're the best you're getting the funding."
Pool then went a step further. Instead of just giving the 35 percent back that YouTube took from donations, he also said he would double the total donations. "Whatever you guys do in super chats by the end of the show, I'm going to match it," Pool remarked.
As donations were pouring in, Ballard emphasized his "gratitude." He said, "I can't believe that there's this many people, the silent majority has risen."
"I have hope. For the first time I have hope that we can actually make an enormous impact in the fight against child slavery," Ballard concluded.
Verástegui offered up a prayer at the end of the stream in an effort to help support kids around the world suffering from trafficking.
