Border czar Tom Homan announced on Thursday that the Trump administration's Department of Homeland Security is drawing down agents and officers in the state of Minnesota after a surge of immigration enforcement. Governor Tim Walz held a press conference after Homan's announcement, saying that the enforcement left "generational trauma" in the state and offered $10,000 "forgivable loans" to residents.

"In addition to taking public safety threats off the street," Homan said, "ICE, here in this state, have located 3,364 missing unaccompanied alien children. Children that the last administration lost and weren’t even looking for. That’s because of the leadership of President Trump these children were located."

He went on to say that "success that has been made arresting public safety threats and other priorities since this operation began, as well as the unprecedented levels of coordination we have obtained from state officials and local law enforcement, I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that this surge operation conclude."

For Walz, the whole thing was unpleasant. In his press conference, Walz said, "We're going to be proposing a reinstitution of our small business emergency fund. It's what we used very successfully during covid in the recovery, in the economic recovery that we saw in Minnesota that outpaced most of the rest of the country."

"We're going to be proposing a first time, $10 million, one-time targeted loans, forgivable loans, that we know, and I want to be very clear, is a very small piece of this." Walz said that the legislature needs to create further plans for "recovery."

"The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here," he added. "There are going to be accountability on the things that happened. But one of the things the incredible and immense costs that were born by the people of this state, the federal government needs to be responsible. You don't get to break things and just leave without doing something about it." He emphasized that there should be legislation preventing DHS, Border Patrol, and ICE agents from wearing masks and indicated that federal lawmaking Democrats should not waver on limiting funding to DHS.

"They left us with deep damage," Walz said. "Generational trauma. Economic ruin in some cases. They left us with many unanswered questions. Where are our children? Where and what is the process of the investigation into those that were responsible for the deaths of Renee and Alex?"

Federal agents surged into Minnesota as reports of wide-spread fraud to the tune of billions of dollars—perpetrated primarily by the Somalia immigrant community—emerged from Minnesota. As part of their efforts, federal law enforcement agents searched within communities and neighborhoods for illegal immigrant criminals who have ICE detainers. Two American protesters were killed while obstructing ICE agents in the process of carrying out law enforcement and concerns have been raised about both the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
