Toronto Mayor John Tory's pet project, Rail Deck Park, is being pushed ahead. This comes despite the cost of the project ballooning since its last projection.
The city's last projection had the costs coming in at around $1.7 billion, however, over the last few months the projection has skyrocketed to $3.8 billion—throwing some doubt on whether it will ever be completed.
Part of the reason why this project is so expensive is that the park is built above land the city does not own, forcing railway companies into tiresome negotiations with Tory's Toronto.
Rail Deck Park is a located in Toronto between Bathurst and Blue Jays Way. The construction itself will be completed over Canada's busiest railway lines.
Mayor Tory was blasted on social media for his continued enthusiasm for this project.
"It's like they're allergic to saving money," wrote the Ontario Director of the Taxpayers Federation.
Another Twitter user condemned Tory's priorities, saying "I can't believe spending $4B for a few acres of our most expensive real estate right now is the right play."
Despite all this, there is some desire for new green spaces in Toronto with many saying that it would help ease congestion in the city's other parks.
