“If only I had gotten help, this would have been preventable"
Bailey pled guilty to two counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated assault in November. At the time of the murders, Bailey also shot at his brother through a door while the sibling was in a room hiding from the murderer.
Bailey, who changed gender and legal name from Collin to Mia in 2023, according to St George News, tried to skip the sentencing, claiming it would be "too tough," and suggesting that the stress of the hearing could lead to a mental breakdown, according to the New York Post.
Bailey has been diagnosed previously with ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, psychosis, possible bipolar with psychosis and schizophrenia, defense attorney Ryan Stout said. Bailey has converted to Islam, according to a statement.
“Because of my religious beliefs as a Muslim, it would be appropriate to take my life for atonement for what I did,” Bailey’s attorney read. Bailey did not have those thoughts immediately after the shooting, and said when he was caught by police that he "would do it again."
The court heard from Bailey’s brothers at the sentencing hearing, who said that they were in fear for their lives since the shooting death of their parents in 2024. One brother, Corey Bailey, said that Bailey wasn’t in the right mind when the murders occurred and is afraid, but doesn’t wish any harm on Bailey. “What’s best for us and what’s best for Mia is probably staying in prison for as long as possible,” Corey said to the judge.
Dustin, another brother, said to Mia in court, “It was clear that you were not safe or well.” Dustin told the court that their mother, Gail, always defended the suspect and advocated for mental healthcare. “When Mia struggled, Gail’s response was not frustration or withdrawal. It was persistence,” Dustin said.
“If only I had gotten help, this would have been preventable,” Bailey’s lawyers read in a statement on behalf of the shooter. During the manhunt, multiple local Utah media outlets as well as a police department presented Bailey as being female after having knowledge that Bailey identified as transgender. The messaging confused residents of Southern Utah on the identity of the shooter, even as police said Bailey was still armed and dangerous.
Recently, a male to female trans killer in Minnesota named Robert (Robin) Westman opened fire on Annunciation Catholic Church, killing two children. Earlier this year, a trans homicide suspect named Alan (Alina) Abad, 19, was arrested in New York for murdering 2 women. Tyler Robinson, the man charged in the murder of Charlie Kirk, was in a relationship with a male to female trans person named Lance Twiggs.
