Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed a failed, Liberal politician to be the Canadian High Commissioner in the United Kingdom.
Ralph Goodale was previously a member of parliament for a Saskatchewan riding and held numerous positions in cabinet before losing his seat in the 2019 election.
The decision to appoint Goodale was made even though he has neither any experience in the diplomatic service or the United Kingdom.
In a press release, the government declared that Goodale's "decades of experience" will improve relations between the two countries, particularly when it comes to trade and security.
Justin Trudeau's communication's director tweeted that "the brilliant Ralph Goodale steps up to serve again. Canada will be well served with him in the UK."
Toronto Star columnist Susan Delacourt seemed to approve of the decision, which is hardly an auspicious sign for the government.
Canada and the United Kingdom are looking to improve their trading relationship now that the constraints of EU trading regulations have been lifted. On top of that, Canada and the UK work together inside the five eyes security partnership.
