Prime Minister Trudeau said on Monday that he understands that Canadians want the land borders open, but that that discussion is "not for today."
"We're all eager to be able to travel again, But I think we're all going to wait patiently until such time as the health situation allows us to loosen border restrictions internationally. That'll be eventually, but not for today."
Many politicians on both sides of the border are pushing for an earlier reopening and are hopeful that it will be sooner rather than later, especially since the border has been shut down for all but essential travel for almost a year now.
Rep. Brian Higgins, (D-NY) has even gone as far as to write a letter to President Joe Biden, asking for him to push for easing restrictions on cross-border travel.
Higgins is hoping for at least a partial opening of the long-closed land border before the end of May.
Trudeau has been speaking a lot with Biden recently, and this has caused people to hope for negotiations to reopen the border, but apparently these discussions have yet to take place.
