Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week will not be attending a meeting with President Donald Trump and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, reports City News.
According to Trudeau’s office, he plans to stay in Ottawa for a scheduled sitting of parliament and a cabinet retreat though he wishes both of the leaders and their countries well.
“We wish the United States and Mexico well at Wednesday’s meeting. While there were recent discussions about the possible participation of Canada, the Prime Minister will be in Ottawa this week for scheduled Cabinet meetings and the long-planned sitting of Parliament,” said the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement.
Trudeau’s office says he plans to continue to work with the two countries and make the agreement a success.
Lopez Obrador was hopeful that Trudeau would be able to join the leaders as he is making his way to D.C.—partly in celebration of the new North American free-trade deal’s entry-into-force.
When asked if he would attend the meeting last week, Trudeau did not say that retreat or Parliament were reasons not to go.
