Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated Canada’s support for Ukraine on Wednesday as tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a video posted on social media, Trudeau emphasized that Canada and its allies remain united in backing Ukraine and opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Canada and our allies are unequivocal on standing up against Vladimir Putin’s illegal, immoral, unjust violations of the international order,” Trudeau said.

He added that he would be meeting with European leaders to discuss continued support for Ukraine: “I’m looking forward to sitting down with my European partners in a couple of hours to talk about how we will continue to stand, unequivocally, in defense of Ukraine, but also in defense of the rules that keep us all safe,” he said.

“Ukrainians have been fighting and dying not just to protect their sovereignty, their territorial integrity,” he said. “They’re also fighting to protect the rules-based order that keeps us all safe around the world and has for close to 80 years now.”

He added, “This period of peace, stability, prosperity for the world happens because we had rules around borders, around not invading your neighbors, that Russia chose deliberately to violate a number of years ago.”

Trudeau captioned the video, “Canada will always stand up for Ukraine."

His remarks come as increasing friction between Trump and Zelensky. On Tuesday, three senior Trump administration officials met with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia to discuss potential negotiations to end the war. Ukraine and European nations were not included in the talks.

Trump later claimed without evidence that Zelensky “started” the war, prompting the Ukrainian leader to accuse him of spreading misinformation. Trump then responded on Truth Social, calling Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and criticizing his leadership.
