Justin Trudeau's mother Margaret has again been caught up in a potential conflict of interest scandal.
This time, Mrs. Trudeau spoke at an organization's event that received $5.8 million from the Liberal government, according to CTV News.
The organization, Elevate.ca, is refusing to elaborate over whether they paid the prime minister's mother to speak at their event.
At the event, which was held on October 14, Mrs. Trudeau spoke about the consequences of Covid-19 and the lockdown on mental health.
The organization Elevate.ca received over $5 million to help provide jobs to under-represented communities. This organization has been lobbying the government for a significant amount of time. In June, the Trudeau government promised to fund a program of theirs.
Elevate.ca has denied that Mrs. Trudeau's speech had any connection to the federal government's funding decision. However, they refused to say whether they paid the prime minister's mother.
The prime minister's mother previously caused one of the most significant scandals of the Trudeau era when it was discovered that the WE organization paid her and other members of the prime minister's family to perform speeches.
This created an alleged conflict of interest when the government then went and awarded a $600 million contract to the WE organization to manage a program that seemed unnecessary.
The Ethics Commissioner later said that there was no conflict of interest present in the case of Mrs. Trudeau. However, Trudeau's first Finance Minister Bill Morneau was found guilty of a similar allegation.
The first WE scandal devastated the government. It is unclear whether this allegation will provoke a similar response from opposition parties and in the polls.
Mrs. Trudeau has refused to respond to these allegations altogether.
