US President Donald Trump is going to send additional agents to the cities of Cleveland, Milwaukee and Detroit, along with additional funding, according to The Hill,. This is part of an ongoing effort to curb sharp increases in violent crime in Democrat-run areas.
This particular operation has been dubbed "Operation Legend," and consists of partnering elite agents from the American Department of Justice (DOJ) with local law enforcement in order to curb the waves of violent crime that have recently been surging in various cities in the USA.
Agents have already been sent to Kansas City, MO and to Chicago, IL often amid objections by municipal governments, questioning the true intentions of Operation Legend, and other controversies involving Depeartment of Homeland Security (DHS) agents in Portland OR, where protestors have tried repeatedly to storm a federal courthouse.
US Attorney general Bill Barr stated: "The Department of Justice’s assets will supplement local law enforcement efforts, as we work together to take the shooters and chronic violent criminals off of our streets." He further iterated that these types of federal task forces have been proven historically to be very effective at their duties.
More than 25 highly trained agents will arrive in Cleveland shortly, making up a multi-disciplinary task force of agents from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to collaborate with local police on issues such as violence with firearms, drugs and gangs. The Cleveland PD will also directly receive $10 million in funding from the feds.
A similar 40 person team is being deployed to the nearby city of Detroit, with the same missions. 11 of the ATF agents headed for Detroit will be there permanently. Detroit will also receive additional federal funding, to the tune of $2.4 million.
And finally, another 25-agent team will arrive in Milwaukee, along with $10.2 million in funding for the local police in Milwaukee and two adjacent municipalities.
As of this writing, Operation Legend has specifically targeted cities with Democratic local governments, and President Trump has on more than one occasion attacked mayors of these cities in his speeches for not acting to stem the rising tides of violence in the cities they govern.
Friction between these Democratic mayors and other city officials country-wide and the federal government is likely to continue, although talks are under way to de-escalate the federal presence in cities if crime can be brought back down.
