Congressman Troy Nehls said what many people are thinking lately, which is that if the US wants a decrease in global tensions, there's one man who is up for the job, and that's former President Donald Trump.
Nehls spoke to Fox News about the cost of the US backing of the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia's invasion of that neighboring nation in February 2022. More than $97 billion has been sent to Ukraine in arms and aid, and while American media claims Russia is losing the war, and Ukraine just needs a little bit more to win, reports from the ground do not uphold those assertions.
Speaking to audiences in New Hampshire over the weekend, Trump touted his policy of "peace through strength," meaning that US power can serve as a deterrent to international warmongers. "Even now I could solve this in 24 hours," he said. "If I were president you would have zero chance that this war would have happened."
"Now we want to send M1 Abrams tanks?" Nehls said incredulously. "Obviously, there's a crisis on every corner in this country and look at what we're dealing with globally, whether it's China dealing with Taiwan, or whether it's North Korea, teasing South Korea. So we've got problems in this country. And I think they're exploiting the weakness we have in the White House."
"31 Abrams, M1, the latest iteration of the tanks, minus the depleted uranium reactive armor, will soon be headed to Ukraine, you're really scratching your head over this one?" Fox asked.
"I am, because the American people have to understand that is a very powerful piece of equipment. But it requires an enormous amount of logistical support, you have to have a logistical package. It has a jet engine," Nehls explained. "When you have to remove that engine, you need a big crane, it's a call an M 88. It's a wrecker for a tank, and you need to have smart people working on that. You need to have the maintenance personnel, you need to have the individuals know how—"
"First come the tanks then come the nukes," Trump had said of the Biden administration's escalation of war aid to Ukraine.
Nehls said that the US would also have to send teams of US military personnel to support the tanks, meaning that along with the equipment comes troops to support that equipment. Biden said unequivocally in March 2022 that the US "will not fight a war against Russia and Ukraine. Direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is World War Three. Something we must strive to prevent."
"I also want to be clear, though," he said at the time, "we will make sure Ukraine has weapons to defend against an invading Russian force. We will send money and food and aid to save the Ukrainian people. And I will welcome Ukrainian refugees."
"We'll defend every single inch of NATO territory of the full might of the United galvanized NATO," Biden said. Ukraine is not part of the NATO alliance. Biden had said that the US would not send tanks, though now the administration has promised to send them. Biden has now said that the US will not send F-16 fighter jets.
"I would say this as it relates to Ukraine. And what we're doing here is that the American people aren't I mean, it's billions of dollars," Nehls said.
"If we really want to end this war, you want in this war, Joe Biden, you need to call Donald Trump. Donald Trump will call Vladimir Putin and end this war. We must stop this war. Donald Trump can do it. He never went into Ukraine under Donald Trump in his four years," Nehls said.
