President Donald Trump has called for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to be charged with inciting violence over comments he made just days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attempted assassination, in which the high-ranking Democrat said the party is "in an era of maximum warfare."

"This lunatic, Hakeem 'Low IQ' Jeffries, should be charged with INCITING VIOLENCE! The Radical Left Democrats actually want to Destroy our Country," Trump wrote, posting a photo showing Jeffries standing next to a poster with the phrase "maximum warfare" on it, along with a photo titled "three days later," showing the moment that WHCD suspect Cole Allen raced through security at the event. The photo included the caption, "Should Hakeem Jeffries be charged with inciting violence?"

In response to Trump’s post, Jeffries wrote, "The Knicks are up 2-0 and I have to wake up to another deranged rant from this guy. Gas prices are sky high, grocery bills are surging and families can't catch a break. Democrats are about to take back the House and you're losing your mind. Where's the luv?"

The "maximum warfare" comments were made by Jeffries at a press conference in the wake of Virginia’s redistricting vote, which passed but has since been overturned by the state’s Supreme Court.

"We are in an era of maximum warfare. Everywhere, all the time," Jeffries said. " And we are going to keep the pressure on Republicans in every single state in the union to ensure, at the end of the day, that there is a fair national map."

The comments came just days before a shooting that took place at the WHCD in Washington, DC, with Cole Allen being arrested and charged with attempting to assassinate Trump. He had written that he was targeting Trump administration officials in a priority order from highest ranking to lowest ranking. The only person shot in the attack was a Secret Service member, who had been wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered only minor injuries.
