Trump orders ICE traffic stops to continue after they were suspended over shootings

Investigations into the recent shootings are underway in both Maine and Houston, and protests against ICE actions have been ongoing.

Investigations into the recent shootings are underway in both Maine and Houston, and protests against ICE actions have been ongoing.

Early Wednesday morning, Trump ordered ICE to resume traffic stops just a day after DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin made the decision to pause the enforcement tactic after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Houston, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 26, in Maine, were both fatally shot by ICE during traffic stops.

After the Maine ICE shooting, which occurred Monday, the state's senator, Susan Collins, requested Secretary Mullin stop “all non-urgent vehicle stops.” Her request was granted for a short time, as ABC News reported a senior ICE official sent an email ordering the immediate stop of all vehicle stops.

Despite border czar Tom Homan calling the decision "a bump in the road," the news of the decision was met with swift backlash from conservatives online, who made their displeasure with the administration known, with Laura Loomer calling for Mullin's rhetorical deportation and Tomi Lahren saying the move was tantamount to betrayal and that it could prompt Trump voters to stay home this November.

Lahren also posted on X that the move was more for PR than good policy.

“So long as DHS and its leadership continue to tailor policies around favorable Lib media coverage, the 77 million of us who voted for MASS DEPORTATIONS will be sold out,” she wrote. “DHS leadership seems to care more about getting good PR (which they will never get regardless) than honoring their duty and mandate to deport millions of illegals. Vote for ‘Republicans,’ get Democrats anyway.”

Lahren's concerns were quickly rectified as President Trump defied Mullin's call to halt traffic stops on Truth Social.

“We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” Trump wrote. “Once we do, we are playing right into the criminals’ hands. The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch. I.C.E., be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job. Keep those Crime Stat Records coming! Remember, you are loved and respected in America. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”
