Speaking with reporters outside of Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said regarding the prospect of pardoning Clancy, “It’s a very sad situation. I certainly heard that.” He added, “there is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead. So, I don’t know, but it’s actually a state situation, you know, not a federal.”
The reporter told Trump that defense attorney Kevin Reddington “is asking you to call the prosecutor in the state, would you do that?”
Trump said that Reddington “is a very good attorney,” adding, “I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out. There is no win there.”
Clancy had been on trial facing murder charges for the killings of her three children. That trial, however, ended in a mistrial earlier in September after one lone holdout juror wanted to find her guilty, while the remaining 12 jurors wanted to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. Clancy remains in custody following the mistrial, as parties weigh next steps in the case.
In the wake of the mistrial declaration, Reddington said, “Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady—the type of person she is and what she’s been through—and consider a pardon.”
