"It could be close to a trillion dollars that we’re going to find that will have quite an impact on the budget."
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump told reporters that he believes his administration will find up to $1 trillion in waste that can be cut down in the federal government.
Trump said that he hoped the court system would "allow us to do what we have to do" and were "elected to, among other things, fund all of this fraud, abuse, all of this horrible stuff going on."
He said that his administration has already found "billions" in waste since taking office, "not like a little bit billions, many billions of dollars." Trump added, "and when you get down to it, it’s going to be probably close to a trillion dollars. It could be close to a trillion dollars that we’re going to find that will have quite an impact on the budget."
Trump later added, "when you look at USAID, that’s one. We’re gonna look at the military. We’ll look at education. They’re much bigger areas, but the USAID is really corrupt, it’ll tell you, it’s corrupt, incompetent, and it’s really corrupt." He said his administration has caught "massive amounts of fraud" amounting to "a lot of billions of dollars already in what, two weeks?"
Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk, who is leading the charge on identifying waste in the government, appeared with Trump, saying that the American people voted for "major government reform. There should be no doubt about that. That was on the campaign, the President spoke about that at every rally." He said that the people would "get what they voted for."
