President Donald Trump has signaled that the cartels in Mexico may be next after the US military conducted a capture of Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro. He made the comments while speaking about the operation to capture Maduro.

The president said that "something has to be done" with the cartels in Mexico while speaking on Fox News. Trump said that Claudia Sheinbaum, although she is the president of Mexico, "is not running Mexico."

"The cartels are running Mexico. And we could be politically correct and be nice and say, 'Oh yes, yes, she is.' No, no. She's very, you know, she's very frightened of the cartels. They're running Mexico. And I've asked her numerous times, 'Would you like us to take out the cartels?'" Trump said, adding that Sheinbaum has turned him down when he has offered to take out the cartels in the country.

"So we have to do something, because we lost the real number is 300,000 people. In my opinion. People like to say 100,000. 100,000 is a lot of people, but the real number is 300,000 people. And we lost them to drugs, and they come in through the southern border, mostly the southern border. Plenty come in through Canada, too, by the way, in case you don't know, but they come in through the southern border, and something's going to have to be done with Mexico," the president added.

The comments from Trump come on the heels of a successful operation in Venezuela to capture Maduro and the Venezuelan leader's wife, who are both now facing charges in the US related to narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons.
