“These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy, with many lives lost, and many still missing. The Trump Administration continues to work closely with State and Local Leaders.”
President Donald Trump has signed a "Major Disaster Declaration" for Kerr County, Texas, as flash floods have devastated the region and claimed dozens of lives, including many children at a summer camp. The declaration will provide local and state emergency responders with immediate access to resources.
“I just signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Kerr County, Texas, to ensure that our Brave First Responders immediately have the resources they need,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy, with many lives lost, and many still missing. The Trump Administration continues to work closely with State and Local Leaders.”
“Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was on the ground yesterday with Governor Greg Abbott, who is working hard to help the people of his Great State. Our incredible U.S. Coast Guard, together with State First Responders, have saved more than 850 lives. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES, AND GOD BLESS TEXAS,” the president added.
The disaster came after a flash flood from the Guadalupe River surged through Kerr County on the Fourth of July, bringing widespread destruction. On Sunday, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed at least 59 fatalities, including 38 adults and 21 children. 22 of the victims remain unidentified, and the number of confirmed fatalities is expected to rise over the next few days.
Still missing are 11 girls and one counselor from a Christian summer camp located along the Guadalupe River. Rescue teams are currently underway.
"Our goal is to rescue those in peril and find those who are lost,” said Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring in a news conference.
