"I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders."
President-elect Donald Trump has spoken out against nations that he believes are harming the US, saying that he would punish them with tariffs over refusals to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the US or to curb the trafficking of fentanyl, which has been a deadly scourge on Americans.
"As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before," Trump said in a post. "Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border." Large groups of migrants have been making their way north to the US-Mexico border since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the White House in 2020. The administration welcomed them with open arms, promising food, shelter, jobs, and pathways to US citizenship. Over 2 million illegal immigrants entered the US under their watch, coming by land, air and sea, turning themselves in and being immediately released into the US interior with court dates years down the road. A new group has formed, hoping to make their way in before Trump and his border hawks take charge of US sovereignty.
"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump continued. "This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!"
Trump has promised to use tariffs not just to equalize international trade but punatively as a means to protect the US and punish those nations who don't comply with the incoming administration's dictates.
"I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail," Trump said in a second post. "Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before. Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
"This will be highly effective," said Elon Musk, who is heading up the coming non-governmental agency DOGE
Musk was responding to Bill Ackman, who said "To be clear, according to Trump the 25% tariffs will not be implemented, or if implemented will be removed, once Mexico and Canada stop the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the U.S. In other words, @realDonaldTrump
is going to use tariffs as a weapon to achieve economic and political outcomes which are in the best interest of America, fulfilling his America first policy. This is a great way for Trump to effect foreign policy changes even before he takes office."
